A Lake District House for Family Celebrations and Reunions

Gather all 24 guests around one 18-foot dining table at the Big White House. Whether you are planning a milestone birthday, anniversary or family reunion, there is room to share a meal and enjoy time together under one roof.

Set in Greengill near Cockermouth, the house offers sole-use self-catering accommodation with 11 bedrooms, three lounges, a separate pool room and a large garden. It is a comfortable, practical base for a holiday with several generations of the family.

Birthdays, anniversaries and time together

A 60th or 70th birthday can be a chance to bring together relatives who rarely get a whole weekend together. Share a birthday meal, look through family photographs or head out for a walk, with time to catch up between activities.

The dining table seats the whole group, so nobody needs to eat separately. The kitchen has two electric ovens, a six-burner gas hob, two dishwashers and two fridge-freezers to help with cooking and clearing up for a large family.

Three lounges for different generations

The ground floor snug, upstairs lounge and cinema room provide three separate places to relax. Some guests can settle down with a film while others chat or watch television elsewhere. The separate pool room gives the family another way to spend time together, and the garden offers space outdoors when the weather allows.

Plan where everyone will sleep

The 11 bedrooms sleep up to 24 guests across two floors. Six bedrooms are on the ground floor and five are upstairs, with a mixture of double, twin, bunk and family rooms. There are two shared shower rooms downstairs and two shared bathrooms upstairs. Nine bedrooms also have an en-suite toilet and wash basin.

How many people can stay?

The maximum occupancy is 24 guests in 11 bedrooms.

Can everyone eat together?

Yes. The 18-foot dining table seats all 24 guests together.

Where can I see the bedrooms?

Our Accommodation page includes bedroom photographs and a room summary. The floor plan shows the layout across both floors.

Can we bring dogs?

Up to two dogs are welcome, at £50 per dog, per stay.

Are short breaks available?

Weekend and midweek short breaks are available, as well as full weeks. Check the availability calendar for your preferred dates and prices.

When can we arrive and leave?

Arrival is from 4pm and departure is by 10am, unless otherwise agreed in advance.

What deposits are required?

A £600 booking deposit forms part of the holiday price. A separate £500 refundable security deposit is due with the holiday balance, 7 weeks before arrival. For bookings made within 7 weeks of arrival, full payment is required at the time of booking. The security deposit is refunded within 14 days after departure, provided the house and its contents are left in a satisfactory condition.
